Year I - Asian Renaissance: Capacity Building for Future Leaders in Southeast Asia

Asian Renaissance: Capacity Building for Future Leaders in Southeast Asia 2006/2007 was held at the Kenyir Lake Resort in Kenyir, Terengganu. The program was attended by a few prominent Southeast Asian leaders and scholars such as Anwar Ibrahim (former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia), Surin Pitsuwan (former Foreign Minister of Thailand and newly designated Secretary General of ASEAN), Dr. V.A. Pai Panandiker (Institute of Objective Studies, India), Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim (former CEO of Guthrie Group), M. Rajaretnam (Executive Director of Goa International Centre) and Khalid Jaafar (ExecutiveDirector of Institut Kajian Dasar). It was officiated by the President of Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Dr. Akinori Seki. Twenty-five (25) young leaders from Indonesia, and Malaysia (graduates from top local and international universities e.g. MIT, Imperial College, University of Chicago, IIU, Paramadina University, Universitas Indonesia etc.) were selected by the faculty members of the Project for Year I. These young leaders were chosen based on their track-record as leaders in their own respective fields, be it business, politics or social organizations.

The participants were given the invaluable opportunity to spend time with all the abovementioned leaders and scholars for a week at the resort. Unlike other leadership forums or seminars, this programme focuses on building thinking skills for leaders, geared towards discussion on ideas and philosophy, with focus on Asian Renaissance. Several topics and issues were exposed to the participants among others include Asian Renaissance, The Future of Asia and The Passion for Freedom by Anwar Ibrahim (former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Distinguished Professor at Georgetown University), What makes a Leader by Surin Pitsuwan (former Foreign Minister of Thailand and current designated Secretary of ASEAN), Indian Experience in Democracy by Dr. V.A. Pai Pandiker (prominent economist from India), Global Economic Trends by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim (CEO of Guthrie Group), Socratic Session by Khalid Jaafar (Executive Director of Institute for Policy Research) and M. Rajaretnam (Ceo of Goa International Centre) and The Art of Networking by M. Rajaretnam. In the last session of the program, the participants were asked to debate That Hayek Got It Right and a vision construction session entitled If I were the Prime Minister/President of my country, what will I do for my country and region. These young leaders were trained to learn and unlearn and most importantly develop and defend their ideas.
